The state government has decided to demolish the wooden bridges which are built over the river and canals. According to the reports prepared by the irrigation department, in the first phase, one thousand wooden bridges in six districts of South Bengal will be demolished and concrete bridges will replace the wooden bridges. Some of wooden bridges are 40 to 50 years old. These bridges are constructed in districts like East and West Midnapore, East and West Burdwan, Bankura and Birbhum. All the wooden bridges are falling under the irrigation department and the company Rights has been asked to conduct a survey on the basis of reports. 760 cr has been allocated for the construction of new bridges. The new bridges will be four and a half metres wide and four wheelers will be allowed to ply on those bridges. Recently some bridges have collapsed at different parts of the state. The hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee has instructed the officials to examine all the bridges in the state.
