Code of conduct for teachers

The West Bengal government has introduced a code of conduct for teachers and non-teaching staffs for the government-funded schools. This code of conduct comprises a list of do’s and don’ts. The code of conduct specifically mentions that a teacher should not indulge in violent or hateful acts on the basis of diversities like religion, caste, gender, community that might affect the students. A clause makes it compulsory for the teachers to be present at Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations. A draft of this code was earlier published by the state government in 2017. The code makes it compulsory for all the teachers and non-teaching staffs of the government-funded schools to abide by the rules or else they would be penalized for violation of the rules. Punishments will vary from suspension to stopping of increments and even dismissal. The code of conduct which falls under the Bengal board of secondary education (appointment, confirmation, conduct, and discipline of teachers and non-teaching staff) rules are published in the government gazette.
