Indian Railway’s electric locomotive manufacturing unit of Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) has set a new record. In the fiscal year of 2018-19 CLW has produced a whopping number of 402 locomotives thus setting up a new record in the production of locomotives. In the previous fiscal year of 2017-18 too, the production rate of CLW was quite high at 350 electric locomotives. The LCW’s production rate has increased significantly by 15 percent in a year whereas the production cost has gone down by 7.5 percent. An indigenously built electric locomotive which is built in this manufacturing unit costs around Rs 10 crores. Apart from setting a new record in the line of production, CLW has successfully manufactured Indian Railway’s first 9000 horsepower locomotive under the ‘Make in India’ initiative’ which was flagged off on March 31. Mr. Praveen Mishra, General Manager of CLW said, “This 900 horsepower locomotive will facilitate in improving through delivering better acceleration reserve at higher balancing speed. This is a great initiative in the direction of right powering of freight trains. Prior to this, WAG9 HC bearing no 32359, last loco from CLW Dankuni was also flagged off through remote”.
