There is a reason as to why Kolkata is called the ‘cultural capital of India’. The ‘city of joy’ homesteads the maximum number of Chinese community in India. There is actually some undeciphered history associated with the hard working Chinese people and it does not end with Chinese food. ‘The Overseas Chinese Commerce of India’ is a conclusive proof that there is a flourishing Chinese newspaper in India which entails the whereabouts of these people in India, especially Kolkata. The newspaper started way back in March 1969, by Lee Youn Chin, a prolific tanner and a community leader. The newspaper incorporates daily Chinese feeds, and also articles pertaining to English papers. It also acts as a medium of newsletter, births, deaths, engagements etc. are carefully advertised in the paper. Although only 200-300 Chinese families currently inhabiting the Tangra area, the circulation of the paper witnessed a significant drop from 800 in 1969 to 180 as of today. However, it is still in production and efforts are made to encourage young Chinese children to learn their mother tongue.
