Team India’s chess players achieved outstanding success in the Chess Olympiad Tournament. The men's and women's teams won the gold medal for India. India became the third country in the world chess history to achieve this title.
Last Sunday, India won two gold medals in the 45th Open Chess category in Budapest. In the final, India defeated Slovenia in the 11th and final round of the Open Chess tournament. This is India’s first golden double. Before this, the Soviet Union achieved the double in 1986 and China won won the double gold in 2018, in Batumi, Georgia.
In the tournament D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, and Arjun Erigaisi won the games for the men's team, while Vidit Gujrathi drew. As a result, India secured a 3.5-0.5 victory against Slovenia. Additionally, P. Harikrishna competed as a reserve player on the men’s team.
Arjun Erigaisi and D. Gukesh recorded the best performances in this event. Arjun Erigaisi won 10 out of 11 matches and Gukesh won 21 out of 22 games. Notably, D. Gukesh was the only player in the tournament to cross a 3000+ performance rating, achieving a rating of 3056 with 9 wins and 1 draw. This was Gukesh's second gold medal in the Chess Olympiad.
In the women's event, India won 3.5-0.5 against Azerbaijan in the final round. The winning players included Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, Tania Sachdev, and coach Abhijit Kunte. Tania Sachdev played for the reserve board and secured 19 points.
