Amidst the arrival of spring, households in Bengal adorn themselves to pay homage to Goddess Saraswati. At Belur Math, as every year, Saraswati Puja unfolds with traditional fervor. Devotees, both young and old, gather at the revered monastery to seek blessings from the Goddess of Learning.
The main temple hosts the ceremonial worship, adhering to the rituals prescribed by the monks and brahmacharis of Belur Math. From the crack of dawn, devotees throng the premises, eager to participate in the auspicious occasion.
One distinctive tradition observed here is the initiation of children into the world of letters through a ritual known as "Hathe Khori." Youngsters, clad in vibrant attire, arrive with their families to receive blessings and embark on their educational journey. Guided by the monks, they trace their first letters, symbolizing the beginning of their educational pursuits.
The goddess Saraswati, depicted with a veena in one hand and scriptures in the other, symbolises the fusion of art and knowledge. Her devotees, engrossed in their devotion, offer simple tokens of reverence such as flowers, sweets, and betel leaves, accompanied by prayers and hymns.
Moreover, Saraswati Puja also celebrates the realm of fine arts. Artists and artisans converge to honour the goddess, infusing the day with creativity and expression. As the day progresses, the ambiance transforms with hues of spring, mirroring the vibrancy of the festivities.
Despite cloudy skies, Saraswati Puja radiates joy and camaraderie. Streets adorned with hues of yellow witness a convergence of tradition and modernity, akin to a Bengali's Valentine's Day celebration.
