Celebrating 100 years of Mrinalini Sarabhai

The real self of an artiste lies in art, so when an artiste performs, all the pain, trauma and tension get released through art, be it dancing, painting, singing, writing or even martial arts. Mrinalini Sarabhai

Outrageously talented, supremely expressive, Mrinalini Sarabhai is one such personality who has inscribed her name in the history with her pliable artistic genius. Founder of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, Mrinalini had shown her excellence in her respective field throughout her life.  She received many awards and citations including Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri and trained over 18,000 students in Bharatnatyam and Kathakali.

An Overview of her life: Sarabhai was born in Kerala on May 11, 1918 to S Swaminathan and A V Ammakutty. She belonged to a family of lawyers and freedom fighters. She had spent her early childhood in Switzerland, where she was introduced to Dalcroze Eurhythmics, a system of introducing musical concepts through movement. She had also spent her life learning in shantiniketan and in the American academy of dramatic arts. Mrinalini had also learned the south Indian classical dance form of bharatnatyam under Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai and the dance drama of kathakali under the legendary guru Thakazhi Kunchu Kurup. She tied knot with Vikram Sarabhai and had choreographed more than three hundred dance dramas with a strong base of classical tradition behind them.

100th-year celebration: On her 100th birth anniversary, Google has today dedicated a doodle on its homepage to Mrinalini Sarabhai. The doodle depicts Sarabhai with her white parasol standing in the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts auditorium. Her students are seen dancing on the stage.
