Cartist Yatra 2019 reached Kolkata this weekend to spread the message of love and unite India with a single thread of art. With it came eight painted cars that have been travelling through various cities of India with the simple message of promoting art, cars and united India. The journey began with Ahmedabad, Indore, Goa, Bangalore, Vishakhapatnam, Bhubaneshwar and then Kolkata. After which it will be travelling to Lucknow, Gurgaon and then Chandigarh. The art work created during the yatra will be exhibited in Jaipur in an exhibition called the Cartist Festival.
We came up with this idea to promote art through cars. This is our second year and coming to Kolkata was a must, given the fact that the city has a rich art connection,
said Himanshu Jangid, founder of Cartist.
The Kolkata chapter of the Yatra was organised at the Eco Park, made the city witness an extravaganza of art and automobile with various systematically planned art events, workshops, exhibitions and lot of other activities. An artwork workshop saw a number of art students participating.
The local artists too supported Cartist’s initiative by painting the wall between Gate number 1 and 2 of EcoPark. Jangid said,
As a token of appreciation, Cartist has taken the initiative of having painted a particular wall of the Park. Keeping the sentiments of the city intact, we have chosen to depict sindoor khela in the wall art. A car Installation will also be gifted to Hidco.
A vintage Herald was coloured in the traditional hues of the tribal Jogi art done by the Jogi Tribe of Rajasthan. Chevrolet with traditional Rajasthani Art, Ambassador with Madhubani Art, auto rickshaw with truck art and a Cobra were the key highlight of the exhibition. Also displayed was Maruti Ritz car, which had been painted in Goa. The car had been donated by Arjuna Awardee and Padma Shri winner, Deepa Malik to Cartist Yatra. Hundred artists participated in the event and created mesmerising artworks on the automobile theme.
Also on display were a Beetle made out of 200 scrap tyres, wired frame scooter and a huge collection of Paintings, wired sculptures and other sculptures.
Chandrakriti Roy, one of the visitor said,
It’s a lovely concept and should happen even more often. I am awestruck with the vintage cars on display and my kids are having a gala time.
Adding to that another visitor, Deki Vince, from Meghalaya, said,
We weren’t aware of this exhibition. But I am glad that we visited Eco Park today. The exhibition is really nice. I will definitely share this experience with my friends back home. The whole idea of introducing car art is unique. If they travel to Meghalaya, then I would mind getting my car painted.
