Weekends are something all of us wait for and weekends are even more fun when we plan a trip. Rabindranath for Bengalis is no less than the idol they worship. Bengalis and Rabindranath are presumed to have a connection since birth. So, if you too worship ‘Kobi Guru’ then Shantiniketan is your ideal place to visit this weekend. The town was established by Maharshi Devendranath Tagore and later extended, by his son Rabindranath Tagore. Viswa-Bharati University is the main place to visit in Shantiniketan. Shantiniketan, which was previously called Bhubandanga, was owned by Zamindars who were known as Sinha’s. Devendranath after his visit to the town found it interesting and hence cropped the idea of Shantiniketan which was initially just a building in the entire town. The history continues and needless to say Viswa-Bharati is one of the top Universities of the world.
How to reach:
Reaching Shantiniketan is easy. There are lots of buses, train as well as car services available. Buses are available from Esplanade. A number of trains are scheduled from both Howrah as well as Sealdah. Prantik is the train stop where you need to get down to reach Shantiniketan. From Prantik there are ample of ‘Toto’s’ available which will take you to your place of interest. You can even hire these ‘Toto’s’ to go around the town.
Food and lodging:
Since, Shantiniketan is one of the most famous tourist spots, there are a number of resorts, guest houses and lodges available at various ranges. You can choose the place according to your budget. Food is available from the place you stay as per order. There are other restaurants around the town, where you can go for your breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Places to visit: There are a number of places in Shantiniketan which will draw your attention. The main one, needless to say is the Viswa-Bharati. Other than that, you can even visit Amar Kuthir, Tagore’s Ashram, Khoai Mela, Rabindra Bhaban Museum, Upasana Ghar, Kala Bhavan, Chhatimtala, Deer Park, Utrayan Complex, Sangeet Bhavan, China Bhavan, Nippon Bhavan and many other places.
Best time to visit:
The best time to visit would be either during March, when the famous ‘Dol Utsav’ takes place or in December when the ‘Poush Mela’ happens.
