Calcutta University is one of the prestigious universities of our country, it has been working actively for the betterment of the poor and needy children of the society under the university’s community service programme. Recently, CU has started adopting the street children near the Giri Babu slum at Bowbazar. The Giri babu slum was adopted by the university last year in order to provide them with proper education and health aid. The vice-chancellor, Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee said,
“This effort is to extend our outreach programme in the area of community service so that more and more poor and needy students have education and healthcare facilities. We are also providing them with nutritious food, books, and other education kits so that they can pursue their education without any difficulty,"
Not only the students but the university makes sure of conducting regular health check-ups of their parents as well. A team of the university’s M. Phil or Ph.D. students are assigned for this task. The students are provided with dresses twice a year and are taken on a day excursion during the winter every year. A senior official mentioned that this year they are planning on taking them to the Alipore zoo and prior to the excursion they will be given the winter garments. The pro-vice-chancellor revealed that they are now trying to provide facilities of basic computer education to these children. They have already organized two laptops for this purpose. The university has been already able to reach out to over 80students between the ages of 6 to 15 years.
