A 15-year-old girl Brishty Mukherjee from Burdwan, Memari is all geared up to play in the Asian Youth Chess Championship next month. The competition will be helmed by Sri Lanka from 1st-10th April,2019. However, participating in Thailand last year was financially challenging for her family. She could compete only after her mother mortgaged her gold ornaments. This year things turned out to be simpler than last time as an NGO named SiiRF has come to the rescue by providing for her trainings and lodging at tournaments outside the state.
Last year in the U-14 girls’ category she won silver missing gold. Brishty gracefully played in the finals against China’s Wan Quian drawing the match scoring 6.5 points in nine rounds, falling half a point short of the total points scored by Kazakhstan’s Kamalidenova Meruert. Then in June 2018, she participated in the Commonwealth Chess in Delhi winning another Silver with the NGO’s help. This year she will compete in the U-16 girls’ category in Championship.
Brishty’s family sustains themselves from the little amount they earn by renting portion of their house. Her tournaments travels were managed last year from the prize money of her previous games, but this year, the central Government will sponsor her travel. She dedicates 8-10 hours of her time a day to her practice but the hassle was travelling from East Burdwan to Kolkata to her training camp in Minto Park. She was a promising contestant last year, and this year with some financial support she confident to give her best shot at the championship.
