In the midst of her beautiful life, Mamata Gayen faced a horrific incident that could have shattered her existence. While some may lose everything in such circumstances, Mamata refused to be defeated. Hailing from Baruipur, she continues her daily battle, selling tea and snacks from a small roadside cart, even after being an acid attack survivor.
Every evening, Mamata sets up her cart at the corner of Ukilpara in Baruipur. There, she sells roti, snacks, and tea to the locals, tirelessly striving to make ends meet. However, her life has never been easy. She used to work as a receptionist for a private firm in Kolkata, commuting daily from Baruipur to Ballygunge. But everything changed one day in 2010.
On her usual commute back home, tragedy struck as she became a victim of an acid attack on the train journey. Since then, her life has taken a drastic turn. Despite the daily struggle, Mamata remains resilient, refusing to give up. However, the journey of recovery has been long and arduous.
For over a year, Mamata underwent treatments in various hospitals, with one of her eyes severely affected. The incident also led to the loss of her job, and tragically, even her husband left her during her darkest hours. Left alone, she had to cope with the loss of her mother, who passed away during Mamata's recuperation.
With nowhere else to turn, Mamata found solace in her own determination. Despite facing physical and emotional scars, she ventured back into the world, this time joining an organisation that supports acid attack survivors in Baruipur. Slowly, her self-confidence began to resurface.
Driven by her indomitable spirit, Mamata decided to take matters into her own hands and start her own mobile cart business. Selling tea, biscuits, snacks, and roti, she sits by the roadside near her home every evening, serving her community with a smile.
Many locals rely on Mamata for their evening meals, buying her rotis and enjoying her tea and snacks. In this way, amidst the hustle and bustle of Baruipur, Mamata continues to fight her battles with resilience and determination, proving that even the most daunting challenges cannot break her spirit.
Mamata Gayen's story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us that strength and courage can overcome even the darkest of days. Despite the adversities she has faced, Mamata stands tall, symbolising the resilience and perseverance of women everywhere.
