Prior to Ayodhya's Ram Lalla, Bengal had already contributed with its exquisite honey and marigold flowers.
Now, Padma Shri awardee weaver Biren Basak, renowned for his craftsmanship, is creating a Ramayana-themed Saree. Expressing his desire, he collaborated with the Ram Mandir authorities. The saree is expected to be dispatched to Ayodhya after the temple inauguration, anticipated for January 26.
In the late '90s, the Ramayana TV series captivated audiences, influencing weaver Biren Bosak from phuliya in Nadia district. In 1995, inspired by the epic, he crafted a Ramayana-themed Saree.
Before embarking on the Saree-making journey, Biren extensively researched at the Krittibas Smriti Granthagar and gathered essential information from the library. He delved into various Ramayana books, including those depicting intricate illustrations. Collaborating with an artist, followed by two skilled weavers, Biren meticulously brought the Ramayana Saree to life.
The entire process took almost two years, resulting in two distinct sarees. One featured illustrations from the Ramayana on Jamdani work, while the other depicted the narrative through silk threads on silk fabric.
Biren proudly shared that his Ramayana Saree has not only gained recognition locally but has been exhibited at various international venues. Responding to public demand, he has since crafted six more sarees. Notably, one of the initial two sarees is destined for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
Biren expressed gratitude, stating that they, from Krittibas Ojha's birthplace, have always been devoted to their craft. Initially, their dream was to present this unique saree to the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The temple authorities recently approved their proposal, and on January 26, the saree is set to grace Ayodhya, becoming a symbol of Bengal's rich weaving heritage.
