Best Tourism Village: Murshidabad's Baranagar has awarded the title of 'Best Tourist Village' by the Centre

The village of Baranagar, located in Murshidabad, has been recognized as the best tourist village in India.

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture (Government of India) organizes the Best Tourism Village Competition annually. Various factors such as environment, education, in this competition and tourist facilities, are assessed to award the best village in the country. This year, Baranagar has been awarded the title of Best Tourism Village in India in the Agri-Tourism Village category. The central government will give the award to Bengal on September 27 on World Tourism Day.

Additionally, Bengal had also won this competition last year. Kiriteshwari village in Murshidabad was honored with the title of ‘Best Tourism Village' Last year, and this year, Baranagar has taken over the title.

Baranagar is renowned for its unique architectural heritage. The village was once known as the ‘Varanasi of India.’ The main attractions here are Rani Bhabani's palace and the four Bengali temples. These include the Bhavaniswar Temple, Rajrajeshwari Temple, Gangeswar Shiva Temple, Panchamukhi Shiva Temple, Adya Temple, and Siddheswari Temple. These temples feature depictions of various Hindu mythological events. It is said that these temples were built by Rani Bhabani of Natore in the 18th century.

Additionally, Baranagar reflects the rich culture and heritage of ancient Bengal. Many residents of this village are involved in the handloom industry. They are well-known for weaving sarees like Baluchari, Jamdani, and Tangail. Women’s self-help groups are also active in Baranagar, producing various crafts that they sell to tourists for income.
