It was a big day for Bangalore-based Bengali techie Satyarup Siddhanta as he became the youngest person in the world to scale seven summits and seven volcanic summits across the seven continents.
On Wednesday, January 16 at 6.25 am IST as he scaled Mt Sidley in Antarctica, Satyarup achieved the feat at an age of 35 years and 9 months toppling the record of Australian mountaineer Daniel Bull who did it at the age of 36 years and 157 days.
Not withstanding the trouble of getting sponsors and mustering funds, Satyarup had set off for the expedition with a debt of Rs 41 lakh on his head a lot of passion for mountaineering in his heart.
His love for mountaineering had been ignited in 2008 when he had been on a trekking trip with friends and fascinated by mountains promised to return at every opportunity.
In December 2017, he had completed scaling seven highest peaks of the seven continents - Mt Vinson Massif, Mt Elbrus, Mt Aconcagua, Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Denali, Mt Carstensz, and Mt Everest.
Buoyed by this achievement, he set his eyes on the seven volcanic summits. Of those, he had already climbed Western Europe’s Mount Mont Blanc and Australia's Mount Kosciuszko. In January 2018, he began with renewed vigor and scaled Ojos Del Salado in South America followed by Mount Damavand, Mount Giluwe in Oceania and Mount Pico de Orizaba in North America.
He had also skied 111 km in six days and reached the final point in the South Pole and on Wednesday morning he scaled Mount Sidley which was the only remaining to help him get the title of the youngest achiever.
Satyarup is likely to return to Kolkata on January 26. His initial reaction after creating the record was, “ I am proud as an Indian and a Bengali.”
