There is another place there that radiates Mughal history and has a direct connection with one of the most influential Queens of the Mughal Period. The tomb of Sher Afgan Khan. Sher Afgan was the last Afgan Jagirdar of Burdwan. He was a Mughal courtier and the first husband of Mehrunissa. Akbar’s son Jahangir was smitten by Sher Afgan’s wife, Mehrunissa. Jahangir wanted to take her to his harem. In 1607, when Sher Afgan revolted against Jahangir and other Mughal rulers, he sent Kutubuddin to take control of the situation, which proved fatal for both Sher Afgan and Kutubuddin. After that Mehrunissa was sent to Delhi. She was married to Jahangir in 1611 and her name was changed to Noor Jahan. She was one of the most powerful empresses of the Mughal Era.
Sher Afgan’s tomb was constructed in Burdwan and it still lies there along with Kutubuddin’s at the Pir Baharam burial ground. So, next time when you are in Burdwan pay a visit to this place.
