The Bagri Market which was ravaged by fire which raged for three days last September has finally reopened. Although some shops especially the medicine shops had opened a month and a half ago, the market finally reopened officially after CESC restored power supply to the market. The shops which opened before the official opening were temporarily running on generators. Avijit Ghosh, CESC vice-president (distribution) said, “We had provided a temporary supply for the repair work at the market. On Thursday, we restored supply after they furnished the clearances from fire, police, KMC and the chief electrical inspector”. “It took me quite a while to realise these were the same shops I used to frequent before the fire. What had changed were not the shops but the corridors. I don’t know how on earth they could widen the corridors but the transformation is amazing,” said a customer who visited Bagri Market for shopping after it officially resumed its operations. The market has undergone various changes and upliftments among which the most apparent is the corridors which were previously infamous because it was hardly four ft. wide, but now the corridors have been widened to 9 ft. to 16 ft. The wider corridors will provide better ventilation and illumination along with more space for movements during an emergency. Other than this, a new fire fighting system has been installed with each shop having at least two smoke detectors and sprinklers, new fire alarms, four new pumps and 14 overhead tanks has also been installed.
