Azad’s Home Turned To Museum

The state of West Bengal has been home to many freedom fighters and their memories have been preserved in different museums. We all know about the Indian Museum but do you know that there is a museum dedicated to the first education minister of independent India. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad had a house in Kolkata’s Ballygunge area. The house was turned into the Azad Memorabilia Museum. It came into being in 1993. The issue was taken up by the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies. The museum houses several artifacts, items, photographs, awards, and gifts received by the Azad. Maulana’s wife Zulekha Begum passed away while he was in jail. Zulekha was buried at the Manicktalla Burial Ground in Kolkata. Among the collections include a ceramic soup bowl which has the Tricolour, the Bharat Ratna Award that he received posthumously. His walking stick, spectacles, leather bag, and other personal things are there on display. Apart from being a good politician, he was also a good poet, writer, and journalist. A part of his life has been showcased in this museum that will take you to Azad’s life. The museum authorities said that do not know how the rooms looked so they didn’t try to recreate the house and dedicated the museum to Azad and to the freedom movement in Bengal.
