After 29 years of marital life, celebrated music composer A.R. Rahman and his wife Saira Banu are heading for a divorce. The couple announced their separation news on Tuesday.
Rahman married Saira in March 1995. His mother first saw Saira at the dargah of the Sufi saint Moti Baba in Chennai and decided she was the perfect match for her son. At 28, after just two months of acquaintance, Rahman tied the knot with Saira. The couple has three children. They have two daughters and a son. All of their children have followed their father’s footsteps into the world of music.
On Tuesday night, Saira's lawyer Vandana Shah, officially announced the divorce, stating that while the couple loves and respects each other deeply, prolonged emotional struggles and mental distance led them to this decision.
AR Rahman also addressed the situation on his X (formerly Twitter) account. He said,
"We had hoped to celebrate our 30 years of marriage together but life takes unpredictable turns. Thank you all for respecting our privacy."
