An ode to the Moner Manush

 “জাত গেল জাত গেল বলে

একি আজব কারখানা

সত্য কাজে কেউ নয় রাজি

সবই দেখি তা না না না…”

The name Lalon Shah is more than just an inspiration in today’s world. His songs and poems were not only about his own philosophy but also about the customs and ill practices of the society. There are only a few reliable sources to know about his early life, since he was a very secretive person. No one knows whether he was born in a Hindu or a Muslim family. He never had any proper schooling in his early age, but that did not stop him from preaching his philosophy to the people.

Fakir Lalon was never a believer of caste system and was against racism. His songs were mostly based on the biased society and his philosophies. Those song are now becoming a landmark in today’s world. Musicians from all over the world are now researching him and his life, to know more about the history of rural India and specially Bengal. They are trying to preach his words to common people through his poems and songs that he had written for the masses.

Musicians from both India and Bangladesh are struggling more to keep the Baul tradition alive in the rural parts of the countries, by making new music and incorporating his songs into it. His contribution to the folk music will never be forgotten.
