AC trams to operate between Nonapukur and Shyambazar

The two new AC trams which were built at the Nonapukur tram depot near Ripon Street by the State Transport Department are now being commissioned to operate soon between Nonapukur and Shyambazar via Dharmatala. The transport department already has two AC trams ‘Charoibeti’ and ‘Rupashi Bangla’ which are used only for joyrides. The response of these two AC trams prompted the transport department to build two new for ferrying passengers daily during the summer. This initiative is being taken to keep the tram system alive and to make people more attracted to this mode of transportation. These two new AC trams will cover a distance of 8.44 km between Nonapukur and Shyambazar via Dharmatala and will complete six trips. Each of these AC trams comes fitted with a 5.5 tonne AC unit, LED bulbs, fans, curtains and pneumatic doors which are to be operated from the motorman’s cabin and costs Rs 25 Lakhs each. The fare structure of these AC trams has been fixed at Rs 20 for up to 5 Km and Rs 25 if it exceeds 5 Km. Transport Minister Suvendu Adhikari had earlier said, “We want to dispel the myth that the state government is trying to wind up trams. That is not the case. Heavy sentiment is associated with trams in Calcutta. Trams should not affect the overall speed of vehicles on roads. But that is not to say we are trying to do away with trams”.
