Rooftop gardens are quite famous in Western countries, but now it is catching on in West Bengal as well. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) wants to use roofs on buildings of New Town to create gardens and organic farms. There is already a garden-cum-organic farm on the rooftop of a community market in the CB block of Action Area I.
The rooftop gardens will not only help in pollution reduction and beautification but also serve as a green escape for the residents and all those who travel there daily. The gardens can also be used as farms to grow vegetables, that one can enjoy fresh vegetables also.
The NKDA has approached the housing complexes with this idea and the civic authorities will give them necessary planning and support to the interested complexes. Unconventional methods of gardening will be used to save more water. The green roofs will ensure a pollution free clean environment. Due to rapid urbanization, the city and the people living in it are getting devoid of greenery, and this step at an era like this will surely get us back in touch with nature.
