Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi signed a bill that would enable urban development and municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim to take charge as the Calcutta mayor. Earlier, Tripathi had sought a legal opinion from the advocate general on the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Bill, 2018, which was passed by the Assembly on November 21. Trinomul had decided to appoint Hakim as the mayor following incumbent Sovan Chatterjee’s resignation. “The bill was sent for the AGs opinion as the governor wanted to know whether its provisions are in line with the constitution,” said a senior government official. The amendment was brought in to allow a non – councilor to be a mayor.
