Kolkata on Monday scored big in its efforts to ramp up the city's organ donation campaign, with two city hospitals transplanting hearts harvested from donors in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar, on two patient in a single day!
The green corridor transfer of the hearts from airport to hospital, a 24 km journey through evening rush hour traffic faced a big problem, when one of the ambulance tire burst in the middle of the journey on a crowded E M bypass and the organ had to be transferred to a police pilot car for the remainder of the drive to the hospital.
Fortunately, the actual procedure happened smoothly and the transplants were successful.
Case 1: Donor- a 24 yr old man from Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh
Flight- Chartered Plane from Rajahmundry to city
Hospital- Fortis Kolkata
Recipient- Samiran Dutta (51) from Salt Lake
Surgery- between 12 midnight to 3 am on Monday
Status- Surgery successful
Case 2: Donor- 19 yr old boy from Patna
Flight- Scheduled flight from Patna to city
Hospital – R N Tagore Institute of Cardiac Sciences
Recipient- Rakhi Mandal (29) from Howrah
Surgery- from a little before 6 pm to 11.30pm
Status- Successful
