On Thursday, the 14th Saras Mela was inaugurated at Salt Lake’s Central Park fair ground and the event was started off by the State panchayat and rural development department minister Subrata Mukherjee. Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation mayor Sabyasachi Dutta, state fire services minister Sujit Bose, women and child development and social welfare department minister Dr Sashi Panja and others.
Almost a total of 345 stalls have been set up in the fair to provide accommodation to the self help group member artisans from about 20 states of the country. The self help groups by different departments, organisations and supported by several banks, would be showcasing and selling their handicrafts and textile products in the fair. Out of the 345 allotted stalls, 25 stalls are assigned for food courts where traditional food from the rural areas would be served.
In a bid to promote the self help groups the West Bengal government has been organising the fair, so that they can put up their exquisite collection of handicrafts and textile products from the rural areas.
